FluMist Intranasal Vaccine (Live Attenuated Influenza Vaccine)
An intranasal influenza vaccine, marketed in Australia as FluMist, became available in 2026. Intranasal means it is administered as a spray into the nose, rather than as an injection. Unlike the standard injectable flu vaccine, the intranasal contains a weakened but live form of the influenza virus. This is an important distinction for people living with IBD and may mean they should not use Flumist.
Trans and gender-diverse people living with IBD
Your healthcare providers should use your correct name and pronouns, record your gender accurately, ask questions about your anatomy only when clinically necessary and clearly explain the need for any examinations or procedures.
Sharing clear information about your medical history, gender and anatomy can help your healthcare professionals provide safer, more affirming, and appropriate IBD care.
Gastroscopy
A gastroscopy is sometimes referred to as upper endoscopy or upper gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy. It’s a procedure that involves a long, thin flexible tube with a light and camera on the end. The tube is passed through the mouth and down into the upper GI tract, where the specialist will look for inflammation, ulcers, narrowing, bleeding, or other abnormalities. They may also take biopsies (small tissue samples), which can help confirm inflammation, rule out other condition such as coeliac disease or infections.
Etrasimod for IBD
Etrasimod is a medicine known as a “sphingosine 1-phosphate (S1P) receptor modulator”. The S1P receptor plays an important role in the body’s immune response. By changing how the S1P receptor acts, etrasimod stops white blood cells (that cause inflammation) from leaving the lymph nodes. For people with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), this leads to less inflammation in the lining
of the bowel, allowing it to heal.
